How to Reset Forgotten Windows XP Password without Logging in

First, we need to create a Windows XP password reset disk, which will be used to load your locked computer and then reset the forgotten Windows XP password. Follow the detailed instructions below:

Step 1: Create a Windows XP Password Reset Disk

Download the Windows Password Reset Kit and save it on any computer you have access to. Unzip the downloaded file, there should be an ISO image file: WPRK.iso.


Download and install the ISO-Burning (BurnCDCC) or USB-Burning (ISO2Disc) program to burn the ISO image to a blank CD/DVD or USB flash drive.

Step 2: Set BIOS to Boot from Windows XP Password Reset Disk

Boot your locked computer. When it is powered on, check the boot-screen for setup key (i.e. DELETE key, F8 key, F2 key) to enter BIOS Setup Utility.


Choose the BOOT menu and set Boot Device Priority option: Set 1st Boot Device to CD-ROM if you just created a bootable CD or DVD, or set 1st Boot Device to Removable Device if a bootable USB flash drive was created. Press F10 to save your changes.

Step 3: Reset Forgotten Windows XP Password

Insert the Windows XP password reset disk on your locked computer and restart the computer. The boot loading screen should appear immediately.
